Eagle House, Blackpool: Then & Now

Writer's picture: NEWSNEWS

The outbreak of World War II brought about a significant role for Blackpool, particularly as a depot for Polish aircrew following the events at Dunkirk. Hornby Road became prominent during this period, with the Goodwood Hotel serving as a centre for debriefing and registration, while the Lansdowne Hotel was designated as the Polish Airforce HQ. Eagle House, originally the White Eagle Club or the Polish Eagle Club until 1999, played a crucial role for the officers, eventually evolving into offices and at one point homed a pub on the ground floor.

A pivotal aspect of Blackpool's wartime history is the 303 Squadron RAF, primarily comprised of Polish members, which was established in the town and made significant contributions during the Battle of Britain.

These brave individuals, who once shared facilities in Blackpool including Eagle House, accounted for nearly 20% of the German aircraft destroyed during the battle. Their efforts were eventually immortalized in the film 'Hurricane' (Netflix, 2018), which depicts the events during World War II. When the long serving owners began reaching retirement age, they began looking for bidders for the building, before selling up to a Blackpool-based investor.

Before DBR Builders took over, Eagle House was occupied by CTS Worldwide Resources Ltd, signifying a shift from its wartime function to an office setting, and subsequently transforming into its current role as a modernized residential complex.

The renovation commenced in February 2020 and was successfully completed by December 2020, overcoming setbacks posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the property wasn't owned by us, DBR Builders (NW) Ltd undertook the project on behalf of an investor.

The final result epitomizes our commitment to revitalizing historic structures with a contemporary twist and practical functionality. The commercial building was converted into a residential complex, boasting 9 modern apartments and 24 ensuites with parking facilities.

The interior design of the renovated Eagle House reflects a modern aesthetic, with spacious kitchens featuring grey and white tones that seamlessly blend with the consistent flooring and skirting throughout the apartments. The bedrooms maintain the theme with grey interiors, white doors, digital radiators, and skirting boards, complemented by bright wood laminate flooring. This contemporary design ethos extends to the bathroom, too.

The building has not only preserved its historical legacy but has also adapted to meet the needs for contemporary living. As we reflect on its rich history, from hosting Polish aircrew during World War II to its modern-day revival, Eagle House stands as a testament to the spirit of progress. More Photos
